The Light We Meet When We Open Our Eyes
Landscapes of Emotion and the Voyage of the Soul
My work explores “surreal landscapes of emotion,” where abstract movements and delicate details
overlap and intertwine, reflecting the ever-changing inner world of the human being.
As we move through life, we carry countless thoughts and emotions within us, and through these
experiences, we gradually create landscapes of our own. Moments of joy and sorrow, anxiety and
serenity, love and solitude leave traces deep within us. Over time, these traces overlap and become a
landscape of the self. The thoughts we hold and the choices we make, even in the smallest moments,
shape the colors of that landscape. And as time accumulates, it eventually blossoms into a light and
presence uniquely our own.
I see this changing landscape of the heart through the image of the hydrangea.
A hydrangea changes its color depending on the nature of the soil in which it takes root. Just as the
same flower can bloom in entirely different hues depending on its surroundings, our emotions are
constantly shifting according to the environments we inhabit, the relationships we encounter, and the
experiences we carry.
For me, the hydrangea reflects the fluid nature of being human.
The layers of color that accumulate upon the canvas are therefore more than a combination of hues.
They are layers of emotion and traces of memory—the imprints of all that we have experienced along
the way. Just as different colors meet, dissolve into one another, and form a single landscape, our lives
are shaped by countless emotions and moments layered upon one another.
And moving through this landscape are the waterways and sailboats.
The waterways represent the passage of time and the ever-changing course of life, while the sailboat
symbolizes each of us as we navigate our own path upon it.
Life is not always calm. There are moments when we lose our way, when we are carried in
unexpected directions, or when we find ourselves unable to see where we are going. Yet we continue
to raise our sails and move forward, searching for our own course.
A sailboat floating alone upon the water may appear lonely, but within that solitude, I see something
deeply noble. Each of us must travel a path that no one else can take for us. And yet, although our
courses may differ, we are all crossing the same vastness of time together.
This is where the “fish that flies through the sky” appears in my work.
A fish, a creature of water, drifting freely through the sky is an impossible and surreal image. For me,
it represents the soul reaching beyond the boundaries of the familiar in search of its own essence.
It is the self that has not yet found where it belongs, still wandering and searching. At the same time,
it is a reflection of the part of us that longs for a light we have not yet discovered—a deeper truth that
exists beyond who we are today.
As we move through life, we continually ask ourselves:
What am I carrying within me?
What am I moving toward?
And what must I learn to let go?
Perhaps the voyage of life is, in the end, a journey toward discovering our own answers to these
questions.
Just as the hydrangea changes its color according to its surroundings, as the waterway continues to
flow, and as the sailboat finds its own course upon that current, so too does the soul gradually discover
its direction through countless emotions and experiences.
And perhaps, at the end of that voyage, what we encounter is not a new destination, but a light that
has been beside us all along.
Perhaps we fail to see the light not because it is absent, but because we have not yet opened our eyes
to it.
Through my paintings, I hope to capture this journey of the heart toward that light—the way we lose
ourselves within layers of emotion, find our way again along the currents of life, and sometimes cross
beyond the boundaries of the familiar, reaching toward the sky.
I hope that those who encounter my work may, even for a brief moment, turn their gaze inward.
To wonder what color they are today,
what waters they are traveling upon,
and where they are truly headed.
And perhaps, when we finally become still enough to look within,
we may come to realize:
Open your eyes.
The light may be invisible to you,
but it has always been shining upon you.
